Advising Instructions

Make sure you read the advising instructions for your program:

Graduate Advising

You may come see me during scheduled office hours. You may check my schedule online using the link in the menu to the left. Please check this regularly as it often changes. (If you cannot make any of my scheduled office hours, contact me by e-mail requesting an appointment - please provide 2-3 times that would work for both you and I, given my schedule.)

If you are new, you need to bring your admission letter from CIS (not the graduate) plus the following forms.

If you are not a new student, please just bring the following forms.

Please layout a plan for the courses you would like to take using the appropriate worksheets below for your entire program. (Note: these are just planning worksheets that Dr. DeLoach uses and not the official Plan of Study (POS) as required by the graduate school.)

Refer to the appropriate program requirements you were sent when accepted or online at:

You also need to have ready for signature the appropriate CIS advising form (you must complete the top portion of the form before advising, we will complete the bottom two sections during our meeting):

General Guidelines

You should plan on taking 9 credits per semester as a full time graduate student. Use the courses for fall and last spring as a guide to what courses will be offered which semester (although we cannot guarantee they will be offered that way in the future, it is our best guide right now).

I generally advise students to take the required courses as early in their program as possible to avoid problems related to courses not being offered when you need them.

Undergraduate Advising

My role in undergraduate advising is that of a mentor, not an advisor. After getting a slip of paper signed by me, you will make an appointment with your advisor to actually select and schedule courses.

My job is to help you out beyond the traditional advising role. I can help you choose between elective courses based on your interests, advise you in choosing a particular specialty, and a variety of other issues related to computer science. I am also here to help you out with other problems where you don't know where to turn. I may not have all the answers, but I can help you find them.

As you know, you are required to meet with me once a semester prior to your advising appointment. I prefer you stop by during office hours (see my online schedule here for my current office hours). If you cannot make any of my office hours (other than the fact that they might be scheduled earlier in the morning than what is convenient for you), please e-mail me and request an appointment. Please chose 2 or 3 times that would work for you and me, based on my posted schedule.
