CIS300 Announcements

May 8

Because next week is Final Exam week, the CIS300 teaching assistants will no longer be able to keep their posted office hours. Please send email to the teaching assistants to schedule any necessary meetings.

I must attend a project-review meeting in California next week, so I will be absent Monday-Thursday. If there is a difficulty, please contact the teaching assistants first, and if they cannot resolve the problem, then please send email to me. I will be available for part of the day on Friday, May 16.

Have a happy summer, and remember to reread all the notes for CIS300 to prepare for the autumn. (-:

April 29

I must attend a funeral in Denver on Friday, so I must be absent on May 1-2. I will be in my office May 5-8, and you are welcome to send an email to schedule a meeting then.

April 28

The last meeting for CIS300 is this Wednesday, April 30.

Exam 3 will be held on Thursday, May 15, 11:50am-12:50pm, in CW102. A short review will be presented at lecture on April 30.

Program 7 is due this Friday, May 2, at 10:00pm.

April 21

The scoresheets for Exam 2 will be delayed for several days, due to a mistake on my part. (I forgot to send the scoring key to the Teaching Assistants on time.) I apologize for the delay.

April 16

Some people have asked that I post the expected point totals for all the CIS300 assignments and exams. Here they are:
  1. Assignments: 1 (5 points), 2 (6 points), 3 (10 points), 4 (5 points), 5 (8 points), 6 (7 points), 7 (5 points, tentative). Total is 7 assignments, 46 points.
  2. Exams: I (25 points), II (20 points), III (15 points, tentative). Total is 3 exams, 60 points.
This makes a grand total of 106 points.

Each semester, the difficulty of the assignments and exams vary, so I cannot commit in advance to a fixed scale for letter grades. Specifically, I am not committed to using a strict 90-80-70-... scale for letter grades. Letter grades are determined at the end of the semester in consultation with the Teaching Assistants, when each student's performance is discussed.

April 2

  1. Exam 2 is scheduled for Friday, April 11.
  2. There is no class on Monday, April 7, Wednesday, April 9, and Monday, April 14. Lectures restart on Wednesday, April 16.

Dean King has sent the following announcement:

The College of Engineering needs your help to ensure an excellent learning
climate for all of our students. We continually strive to establish a learning
and working environment where students, staff, faculty, and administration
appreciate the benefits of interacting with peers and colleagues who differ in
gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds. Strategic planning is central to the
development of a process that can be used to improve the academic and social
environment of our College. The initial step in this process involves the
identification of diversity issues that impact the climate of the College.

Beginning next week we will be asking you to participate in an on-line Student
Climate Survey administered by the IDEA Center. Your responses in this survey
will greatly influence the path that is taken for each of us to more fully
understand diversity issues and multicultural competencies, their values, and
their importance in a quality educational experience at Kansas State
University. By completing the Climate Survey you may have an immediate impact
on the climate of the College, in addition to influencing the educational
environment of future students. Please take this step in our strategic
planning
process seriously. We value your input and are grateful for your time and
thoughtful responses.

There is no lecture on Friday, March 28, because of University Open House.

February 24

February 22

Regarding Assignment 3: BlueJ users have noticed that the ``MapReader'' class cannot locate the filename submitted by the user. If you use BlueJ to test your program, you must supply the full path to the input file in the input dialog.

For example, if your input file, flights.txt, is located inside the Assign3 folder on your C-drive, then type the filename as

C:\Assign3\flights.txt

February 20

Exam 1 is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday March 5. Further information will be provided next week.

The CIS300 Teaching Assistants will exchange their consulting hours the week of February 24 as follows:

17 February

The sheet for Assignment 3 did not make clear when one should place the file that holds the flight map. The simplest arrangement is this:

  1. Construct a folder named Assign3
  2. Place package Mileage and package Shortestpath in Assign3
  3. Place the flight map, flights, in Assign3.
If you do this, then you can start and use your application exactly in the fashion portrayed in the Assignment 3 sheets.

3 February

I must leave town on Thursday, February 6. Therefore, I will not be available for my office hours on Feb. 6. Sorry.

Also, there will be no lecture on Friday, February 7.

16 January

There is no lecture on Monday, Jan. 20.
