My name is Arul John, and I graduated from the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) in the Computer Science department. I was in Kansas State University (KSU) earlier. The city I lived in, Manhattan, is a lovely place. It is also known as the Little Apple.
What I am doing right now : I am working for a company in Virginia.
My Masters Project : Here are details of my Master's project. It is titled Personalised Information System and is about personalisation of users' preferences. Users can monitor stock values for desired stock symbols and get notified automatically by email whenever the stock of their interest crosses a threshold. Well, not only stock, but weather and airline prices too. There is also a search tool that uses displays a more refined search for each user, depending on the user's preferences and background. So, if a doctor types in 'virus' and clicks on search, he gets a listing of mostly biological viruses, but if a programmer types the same, he gets to see computer viruses. I design and code intelligent agents to work on the searching. And I also use Google's APIs.
I implement my project in .NET using C# extensively for writing web services and for doing all the ADO.NET work. The interface is in ASP.NET for the web version, and VB.NET for the application. C# is an interesting language and I hope to work on it in future again.
My interests : I am basically an XML programmer.. My favourite programming languages are Java and Perl, and I write a lot of ASP code too. I love programming and spend hours coding something or the other just for the heck of it. I have also written utilities using Python and PHP
My interests are quite varied, and web programming tops the list. I also do network programming often, usually in Java and Perl, and sometimes in C. You may test my IP tracking program, which tracks any IP address upto its ISP, and my telephone lookup program, which fishes out the name and address of the person under whom the phone is registered. I wrote these in Perl.
I am a member of Topcoder and have a rating there. The competitions bring out the programmer in you, and you get to see where you stand when you compete with the best programmers in the world.
My computer : I have a Dell computer running on an Intel P3 processor, and it works just great! It is a dualboot with Windows 2000 and Mandrake Linux 9. I still spend a lot of time configuring and reconfiguring my Linux partition, and it is fun to have so much power in your hands with the OS. Mandrake is my favourite flavour. I have compiled a lot of information for Linux in the tech section in my KSU site, including dualbooting.
